He saw a child in danger — and didn’t hesitate. Now, a grieving family is asking for support after their loved one made the ultimate sacrifice in the waters of the Chattahoochee River. In a split second of courage, he gave his life to save another. His name may never make headlines, but to one family — and to one child who gets to live — he’ll forever be a hero. As the community gathers to honor his memory, one question lingers in the air: how do you say thank you to a man who gave everything?

ROSWELL, Ga. — A metro Atlanta family is asking for community support after a man died while saving a child struggling in the Chattahoochee River.

Frank Young never resurfaced after he helped bring the child safely to shore on the night of Wednesday, July 2. Roswell first responders searched for his body for hours, ultimately recovering him near Garrard Landing Park later that night.

Family members described Young as a loving husband, father, and beloved uncle who was a hero.

“His passing has left a permanent mark not just on those who knew him, but on an entire community, a reminder of the power of selflessness,” family members said.

According to his family, Young answered the cries of a mother and a young child of a family friend.

“The family, in this moment, is going through a lot of pain, especially his only son, who doesn’t have enough money to cover the funeral expenses,” the family said in an online fundraiser.
